John Hopfield was one of the pioneers of neural-level AI research, giving his name to the Hopfield networks  inspired by spin-glass models in physics.  He also wrote about the importance of 'sleep' in neural network learning.  With Geoffery Hinton he was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024
